The Gotō chain lies west of Hizen and is the last land before the open sea to Song China.
The last point of departure of Japanese envoys to Tang China in earlier centuries was here [not yet checked against the source]. It is a poor island group of small fishing communities, a stage for the China ships and for the Matsura boatmen.
