Dozza became a free commune about 1150 on a hill the Carolingians had given to the church of Imola; the chapter of San Cassiano lived there in 1151-1182; the castle passed repeatedly between Bolognese and Imolese families (undated). The Imola history says Dozza was conquered in 1198 without naming the conqueror.
