Bruneck does not exist on 1 January 1200: it is founded by Bishop Bruno of Kirchberg (1250-1288) and first documented on 23 February 1256.
The site holds the old village of Ragen (given to Bishop Albuin of Brixen in the tenth century) and houses along the later Stadtgasse built in the twelfth century; the bishop's estate centre in the middle Puster valley is at Aufhofen.
