Upper Min chiefs

Qiang villages with stone towers and Tibetan valleys along the Min above Weizhou, in the mountains where the river leaves the plateau.

They farm the terraces, herd yaks and sheep, sell herbs, musk and furs, and buy salt, cloth and tea at Maozhou. The Song hold the towns of Weizhou and Maozhou and the road; the villages decide for themselves, by headmen and by feud.

No chief is named in any source we have.

Overlord

The Song claim them as tribes held on a loose rein (jimi) and give titles; they pay no regular tax. Nobody else claims them.

What it holds

  • The valleys of the Min above Weizhou
  • The side valleys west to Lixian (not pinned)

How it was acquired

Hereditary.

Allies and rivals

Feuds between valleys; trade with Maozhou; no known alliance with a Tibetan polity in 1200.

How things stand that morning

No revolt and no campaign is known for the winter of 1199-1200. We know of no monastery in these valleys: Tibetan Buddhist influence at Maozhou in 1200 is thin to the point of unknown; the older Bon and local cults are likelier.

Wealth

Herds, musk, herbs, furs, hemp.

Military

Village militias and stone towers; no numbers.

Threats

  • A Song garrison raid after a theft.
  • Famine in a hard winter.

Where the sources disagree

Evidence: The Songshi's Manyi chapters (recalled, not re-read) name the Qiang, Tibetan and Man groups of the Sichuan edge, but no chief of 1200 is known to me. The record says what kind of power it is and where, and nothing more.

On the map: A rough block over what is really scattered valleys; the Tibet map owns most of this ground by the sheet rule.
