The Laguna Copperplate of 900, found at the mouth of the Lumbang river in Laguna (found 1987 by a dredging worker, bought by the National Museum), is dated Saka 822, 21 April 900 in the Julian calendar (Antoon Postma's reading and Hector Santos's calendar work).
It clears a debt for a family of Tundun in the presence of leading men of Pailah, Binuangan and Puliran, with the chiefs of Dewata and Medang invoked as higher authority, in Old Malay with Sanskrit and Old Javanese words, in Kawi script. Titles named include senapati (commander), pamegat (judge or chief) and nayaka. Tundun is read as Tondo on the north side of the Pasig delta.
Nothing else names Tondo until the Spanish accounts of the 1570s, and no document names its leaders in the twelfth or thirteenth century. The question 'state or landing' cannot be settled: in 900 a polity with titled men inside a literate Malay-Javanese world; in 1200, at least a trading settlement of the Pasig mouth with its datu or council, and no more is known.
Who he is
- Title
- Chief (datu) or leading men of Tundun at the Pasig mouth
- Since
- not pinned
- Born
- not known
- Family
- not known
- Confidence
- low
No source names the chief of this place for 1200. The word datu (and barangay) is recorded by the Spanish from the 1560s; the Copperplate of 900 uses Sanskrit-Malay titles instead. Everything about 1200 is inference from archaeology and later accounts.
What it holds
- The Pasig river mouth and the landing
- The lake highway from Laguna de Bay to Manila bay (the Pasig is its outlet)
- Debt and bondage claims on dependants (as the Copperplate shows for 900)
Allies and rivals
Pila and the lake shore towns on one side, the sea on the other; Dewata and Medang named in the Copperplate as higher authorities in 900.
How things stand that morning
Not described for 1200. Namayan, upriver at Santa Ana, is a rival or partner in later tradition only.
Wealth
Trade in gold ornament (piloncitos in later finds), forest produce, cloth; no figures.
Military
War boats and raiding parties in the later record; no numbers.
Threats
- Raiders from the next coast
- Typhoon and flood
- A change in the Chinese trade
Places of note
- Tundun (Tondo): Pasig mouth, north bank (board position).
- Wawa on the Lumbang river: Find place of the Copperplate in the Lumbang mouth; the plate may have been carried there.
Where the sources disagree
- The campaign board entry id lumban-wawa-lci gives the find as 1989; Wikipedia gives 1987 for the find and the sale to the National Museum later. Postma placed Pailah in Bulacan (Paila, Norzagaray) and Binuangan in Obando; Tiongson places Pailah at Pila, Laguna, and Binuangan in Camarines Norte; the readings are not settled.
- 'The Rajahnate of Maynila' and Lakandula's line are fifteenth century and later traditions; the Battles of Manila of 1258 and 1365 cited on Wikipedia's timeline are not sourced there.
Evidence: Wikipedia ('Tondo (historical polity)') says no event or ruler is recorded for the twelfth and thirteenth centuries; the campaign board marks it 'likely'.
"The campaign board" is OMNIA's working map. These notes record where its earlier claims were checked against the sources.
