Ternate is one cone, Gamalama, rising from deep water, with a fringe of villages on the narrow shelf between the surf and the forest and the clove groves above them.
The island grows almost no food and lives by exchanging cloves for sago and rice brought across from Halmahera and from farther west (the campaign board). The Ternate chronicle's tradition gives the island several early villages, each under a leader called momole, and begins its king list (kolano) with Baab Mashur Malamo in 1257 (the date is traditional; every date in the list before about 1500 is, as the English Wikipedia page states), with the sultanate of the late fifteenth century. For 1 January 1200 there is no king any source can name, no writing, no coinage and nothing built for defence.
The tradition of four brother-kingdoms (Ternate, Tidore, Bacan and Jailolo) belongs to the later telling and is not read back here.
Who he is
- Title
- Heads of the island's villages (momole in the later tradition); there is no king (kolano) yet
- Since
- not pinned
- Born
- not known
- Family
- not known
- Confidence
- low
No source names a chief of this place for 1200. Every title in this record (datu, to manurung, kolano, momole, orang kaya) comes from traditions or reports written down centuries after 1200. No source names any chief of this place for 1 January 1200.
What it holds
- The village shelf of the cone
- The clove groves above the villages
- The sago and rice trade across the strait from Halmahera
Allies and rivals
Tidore across a mile or so of water, whose rivalry has no documented beginning; Halmahera for food.
How things stand that morning
Not described for 1200. Cloves are certainly grown and sold; the campaign board says every clove in the Mediterranean and China began under the five clove mountains, carried west by other people's ships.
Wealth
Cloves; no figures.
Military
Not known; boats, spears and shields in the later record. No numbers.
Threats
- An eruption of Gamalama (the dated record is later)
- A failed trade season for the Javanese and Malay ships
- A shortage of sago and rice
Places of note
- Ternate: Village shelf of the cone.
- Gamalama: The cone, among the most active volcanoes of the archipelago (board).
Where the sources disagree
- The campaign board entry id ternate-and-tidore is split between this record and the Tidore record; the campaign board's own text says no king can be named for 1 January 1200, and we agree.
- The campaign board's 'nothing built for defence' is a safe negative; we found no source that says otherwise.
Evidence: A late tradition (Ternate chronicle, king list from 1257) and the campaign board; nothing written for 1200. The campaign board marks the island 'likely'.
"The campaign board" is OMNIA's working map. These notes record where its earlier claims were checked against the sources.
