Palchen Opoche

Palchen Opoche is the one brother in the house who carries the line: he is married and his sons are the next generation of Sakya.

He is about 49 on 1 January 1200 and will die in 1203, which leaves his son Sakya Pandita, then 21, with his uncle Drakpa Gyaltsen as teacher (Wikipedia, Sakya Pandita: Drakpa Gyaltsen instructed him in sutra and tantra and he became the uncle's principal disciple). The pages call him a layman; whether he also manages the household's land and tenants, as a younger brother of a family head would in Tibetan custom, is our inference and not on any page. He is an NPC of weight: a death in 1203 changes who guards the boys.

Wikipedia (Sakya, Sakya Pandita): the fourth son of Sachen Kunga Nyingpo, 1150-1203, father of Sakya Pandita (born 1182). The Chinese page names him in the same terms. No office is given.

Overlord

none: no one rules Tibet in 1200; the house answers to its own patrons and to the custom of the valleys

What it holds

  • His household in the Sakya establishment
  • No separate land is recorded

How it was acquired

Born into the house; no grant.

Allies and rivals

Brother and head: Drakpa Gyaltsen. Sons: Sakya Pandita and Zangtsa.

How things stand that morning

Living at Sakya with his sons.

Wealth

No source we could open gives figures; the usual base is estates and serfs, herds, pass tolls, trade in salt, wool, tea and barley, and the gifts of patrons.

Military

No standing army; the house or lord calls on retainers, tenants and kin. No troop numbers are given by any source we could open.

What the year holds

What happened next, if nothing in play changes it. Each event carries what it depends on and what would stop it.

Places of note

  • Palchen Opoche's household: Inside the North Monastery establishment

Where the sources disagree

Evidence: Dates only; nothing on his office or land. Treasury of Lives, the Blue Annals, the Red Annals, Petech, Sorensen and Hazod and Davidson could not be opened in this session (treasuryoflives.org and rigpawiki.org refused the fetch; the archive.org full texts were refused or cut off), so facts marked 'recalled' are from memory of those works and unchecked.

On the map: Point only.
