Oton and Panay datus

The south coast of Panay behind Guimaras is sheltered water and a rich rice plain.

Graves at Oton (Barangay San Antonio, 1960s) gave up high-quality gold work including a beaten gold death mask, and that settles the wealth of this coast without any writing (Wikipedia, 'Oton, Iloilo'; the mask's date is not pinned here). Local tradition and the Maragtas (compiled in 1907 by Pedro Monteclaro and dated by him to 1212) tell of ten datus from Borneo and the kedatuan of Madja-as. That is a modern compilation; it is not used.

No source names the chief of this place for 1200. The word datu (and barangay) is recorded by the Spanish from the 1560s; the Copperplate of 900 uses Sanskrit-Malay titles instead. Everything about 1200 is inference from archaeology and later accounts.

What it holds

  • The Iloilo strait landings and the rice plain
  • Gold work and the craft of the graves
  • Shipbuilding, as later Spanish accounts show

Allies and rivals

Tied to its neighbours by marriage, debt, feud and raid; nothing above it.

How things stand that morning

Not described for 1200.

Wealth

Rice, gold work, boats; no figures.

Military

War boats and raiding parties in the later record; no numbers.

Threats

  • Raiders from the next coast
  • Typhoon and flood
  • A change in the Chinese trade

Places of note

  • Oton: Gold death mask find, Barangay San Antonio (position approximate).
  • Iloilo strait: Sheltered water behind Guimaras.

Where the sources disagree

  • The Maragtas 'ten datus, 1212', the Kedatuan of Madja-as and the Iloilo-Borneo flight are not evidence for 1200 (brief).

Evidence: Archaeology of the graves only; the tradition is rejected as a source for 1200. Wikipedia's 'Oton' page also cites a 'twelfth-century Pon-i invasion' from the Nanhai zhi; we could not trace it and do not use it.

On the map: A river mouth community's near land, drawn as a seeded block.
