Hilly islands at the narrowing where the strait's traffic funnels, with deep water on all sides.
The sea people who live on their beaches pilot ships through the channels and sell them protection; where it is not bought they take. A Buddhist figure and an inscription cut into a rock face on Karimun show that people of learning passed this way, but we could not date either. No source before Wang Dayuan (1349) describes the sea people of the strait; their role under Sanfoqi is the campaign board's inference and a later tradition.
