Kinabatangan headmen

The Kinabatangan is the long river of north-east Borneo.

It drains a forest that supplies rattan, damar, gaharu, wax and, from the limestone caves at Gomantong, swiftlet nests. Its trade faces the Sulu sea, so this coast is in the orbit of the Sulu boats rather than of Po-ni. The brief notes that no source shows edible nests being exported before the Ming, so the caves are recorded here as places, not as a 1200 export.

The river headmen (the Orang Sungai of later ethnography) would take what passage and exchange they could.

  • The route to the Gomantong caves
  • Exchange with Sulu and Sama boats

Allies and rivals

Sulu and Sama-Bajau boats from the north-east; Po-ni is far to the west.

How things stand that morning

Not described for 1200.

Wealth

Forest goods; sea goods bought from the Sama. No figures.

Threats

  • Raiding by sea from the Sulu side
  • Flood

Places of note

  • Kinabatangan mouth: River mouth on the Sulu sea.
  • Sukau: Lower river village site (position approximate).
  • Gomantong caves: Limestone caves with swiftlet nests; no export before the Ming is shown.

Where the sources disagree

  • The campaign board entry ids kinabatangan-mouth and gomantong-caves are kept here; Semporna and Bum Bum are kept with the Sama-Bajau record.

Evidence: Geography only. The campaign board marks it 'likely'.

"The campaign board" is OMNIA's working map. These notes record where its earlier claims were checked against the sources.

On the map: Seeded blocks along the lower river.
