Governor of Beloozero

Beloozero, the old town of the Ves at the head of the Sheksna by the White Lake, named in the Primary Chronicle's tale of the year 862, is the northern outpost of the Rostov land.

Its people are largely Finnic Ves, who rose with their pagan priests in 1071. In 1200 the grand prince's man collects their furs and guards the waterway from the Volga up the Sheksna to the White Lake and on to Novgorod's lands by Lake Onega and to Vologda. No prince sits here until after 1238.

No governor of Beloozero is named for the twelfth century in the sources reached. The nearest dated evidence: in 1071 Yan Vyshatich collected tribute at Beloozero for Sviatoslav of Chernigov (Primary Chronicle); the first prince of Beloozero, Gleb Vasilkovich, is of 1238 and after.

Overlord

Grand Prince Vsevolod III (Beloozero belongs to the Rostov land)

What it holds

  • The town of Beloozero with the White Lake and the Sheksna valley
  • The tribute in furs of the Ves
  • The waterway from Rostov to the Onega and Dvina lands

How it was acquired

Part of the Rostov land since the eleventh-twelfth century (it was linked to Chernigov in 1071).

Allies and rivals

Faces Novgorod's Obonezhye to the north and Vologda to the east.

How things stand that morning

Held for Vsevolod by an unnamed governor (thin).

Wealth

Furs, fish, the tolls of the Sheksna route.

Military

A wooden fort; no garrison figure.

Threats

  • Novgorod's tribute collectors in the same forests

Where the sources disagree

  • en.wikipedia's Belozersk page says the territory was controlled by Novgorod from the tenth to the thirteenth century. That is not the usual view: the Rostov-Suzdal princes held Beloozero in the twelfth century and it became Konstantin's line's appanage after 1238. We follow the usual view.

Evidence: Beloozero's place in the Rostov land is clear; its government in 1200 is not recorded.

On the map: The north and west edges against Novgorod's Obonezhye and the Mologa are estimates.
