Chiefs of Kerinci

A high valley with a lake in it under the biggest volcano of the archipelago, growing rice far above the malaria line and sending cassia bark and forest goods down the Merangin to Jambi.

The Kerinci are their own people with their own chiefs. A fourteenth-century law code on bark from Tanjung Tanah in Kerinci (the Kozok reading, from memory) shows a Malay-writing, law-making highland society a century and a half later; nothing is known for 1200.
