Barons and castellans · Prince-bishopric of Trent · as at first light, 1 January 1200

Castelbarco

A family of great vassals (milites maiores) named from Castel Barco above Chiusole on the right bank of the Adige in the Val Lagarina, growing more independent through the twelfth century.

Briano is the head of the house after 1195 and attends the bishop's courts from 1201 to 1227. During the crisis of Bishop Conrad's rule he takes the castles of Avio and Lizzana, which root the family in the lower Val Lagarina, but the dates are not pinned against 1 January 1200.

Who he is

Since
By 1198 (a sale and investiture of Castelbarco castle), after Aldrighetto of Castelbarco disappeared in Verona in 1195

Overlord

The bishop of Trent.

What it holds

  • Castel Barco above Chiusole and its district
  • Avio and Castel Lizzana, taken during Conrad of Beseno's troubles (dates not pinned)

How it was acquired

Fiefs of the bishop of Trent; Avio and Lizzana by force or purchase in Conrad's time.

Allies and rivals

Rivals: the bishop's other vassals in the valley; Verona, which presses up the Adige. The house will ally with Ezzelino III in the 1230s.

How things stand that morning

Briano holds Castel Barco as the bishop's vassal. Whether he already holds Avio and Lizzana that morning is not pinned.

Wealth

The Adige road between Verona and Trent; vineyards and river traffic of the Val Lagarina.

Military

Castel Barco; possibly Avio and Lizzana. No figures.

Threats

  • Verona's pressure
  • The bishop's attempts to restore his rights

What the year holds

What happened next, if nothing in play changes it. Each event carries what it depends on and what would stop it.

  1. 1201-1205 (beyond 1200)Briano strengthens the house in the bishop's crisis, taking Avio and Lizzana if he has not already.Depends on: The bishop's weakness. Stopped by: A strong bishop or Veronese intervention.

Places of note

  • Castel Barco: The family's castle above Chiusole

Where the sources disagree

  • it.wikipedia's genealogy gives Aldrighetto's death as 1198 and Briano's birth as 1192; the Ferrara text has Aldrighetto disappear in Verona in 1195 and Briano act in 1198.

Evidence: Names and the castles are attested; the dates of Avio and Lizzana are not.

On the map: Rough: the castle districts are drawn as modern comuni.
