Bamberg: Villach

Villach on the Drava, the great bridge town on the road from Vienna and Styria to Venice, has belonged to the bishops of Bamberg since 1007; it had market rights in 1060 and is a fully developed town by 1240 at the latest.

With it Bamberg holds the Kanaltal (Tarvis, Malborghetto and Pontafel) down to the Friulian border at Pontebba, and the Benedictine abbey of Arnoldstein, a Bamberg foundation at the mouth of the Gail. The Carinthian duke has no court here: his successors compete with Bamberg for Villach 'without much success'.

How it was acquired

From Henry II's endowment of the see (1007).

Places of note

  • Villach bridge and market: Market 1060.
  • Arnoldstein abbey: Bamberg's abbey at the mouth of the Gail.
  • Tarvis: The Kanaltal road.

Where the sources disagree

Evidence: Bamberg's possession of Villach is well attested; the Kanaltal is attested as Bamberg's without dates in the source reached, and the officers of 1200 are unknown.

On the map: Bamberg's Carinthian estates were scattered; the drawing shows the two main blocks.
