Torne and Lule Lapland

The high fells along the Scandes from Treriksröset to the Pite watershed and the forests and rivers below them: the Torne and Muonio (Enontekiö, Kiruna, Pajala), the Kalix (upper) and the Lule (Gällivare, Jokkmokk), down to the coast round Luleå and Boden, where no farming settlement is attested before the 14th century.

Sami siida hunt wild reindeer in the fells and fish the rivers and lakes; their furs go west over the fells to Hålogaland and down the rivers to the Bothnian Bay.

  • Enontekiö: the upper Muonio and Ounas fells
  • Luleå: the Lule river mouth; no settlement of farmers in 1200

Where the sources disagree

Evidence: General Sami history; no source for 1200.

On the map: The western edge follows the modern Norwegian border along the Scandes; the Hålogaland side is the now sheet's. The lower Torne valley and the Kalix mouth are drawn with the Kvens.
