King Lothar gave the bishop of Trieste the royal power over the city and the land three miles beyond its walls in 948.
The bishops never took the title of count, and the citizens had a commune by about 1060, but on 1 January 1200 the bishop still holds the public rights the commune will later buy from him: the choice of the city's judges, the tithe and the mint. Trieste is a small port in the shadow of Venice and the patriarch of Aquileia.
Who holds it
- Title
- Bishop of Trieste
- Since
- not pinned
- Confidence
- low
The Italian Wikipedia list gives Woscalco (1190 to after 1192) and Enrico Rapizza (mentioned 1201), then Gerardo (before 1203 to after 1212). Who holds the see on 1 January 1200 is not pinned; Enrico Rapizza is the nearest attested name.
What it holds
- Trieste and its territory to three miles beyond the walls: the royal power granted by King Lothar in 948
- The right to choose the city's judges, the tithe and the mint, which the bishops will sell to the commune in the 13th century (purchases of 1236 and 1253)
How it was acquired
Lothar's grant of 948 to Bishop John placed Trieste directly under the crown's representative, the bishop, rather than the Istrian margraves.
How things stand that morning
The bishop keeps his royal rights, but the commune runs the city's daily business. Treccani's verdict is that the bishops never became effective lords.
Wealth
A small port with its trade to the Karst and Carniola; the episcopal mint and tithe.
Threats
- The commune, which will buy and then seize his rights (1236, 1253, 1257)
- Venice's grip on the Adriatic
Advocates and rivals
The citizens' commune, active since about 1060; the patriarch of Aquileia, whose Muggia lies across the bay; Venice, mistress of the Adriatic; the margraves of Istria.
What the year holds
What happened next, if nothing in play changes it. Each event carries what it depends on and what would stop it.
- Autumn 1202As the crusade fleet sails for Zara, Trieste's envoys swear loyalty to Doge Enrico Dandolo; Venice leaves the city its internal autonomy.Depends on: The Fourth Crusade sailing in Venetian ships and turning on the Adriatic towns. Stopped by: No crusade contract with Venice, or a fleet that never sails.
Places of note
- San Giusto: The cathedral on the hill
Where the sources disagree
Evidence: The 948 grant and the later sales are well attested; the bishop on 1 January 1200 is not.
On the map: The modern municipality of Trieste is a little larger than the three-mile district of 948.
