The Hatadage at Polonnaruwa

A stone-and-brick relic house built by Nissanka Malla (1187-1196) beside the Vatadage and the Galpota, to house the Tooth Relic that Parakramabahu I brought to Polonnaruwa.

To hold the relic is to hold the kingdom's legitimacy. The house is a fortified shrine within the royal city.

Where the sources disagree

  • The Tooth Relic's later history (Dambadeniya, Kandy) is not carried back.

Evidence: The shrine or community is real, but what it held and who ran it in 1200 is inferred from general or later accounts; no page we read dates anything about it to 1200.

On the map: Drawn as a small disc round the shrine; the real estates were scattered villages.
