The Gorakhnath matha and the Nath yogis of Gorakhpur

The Nath yogis honour Gorakhnath, a teacher of the eleventh or twelfth century whose dates are not fixed, and their centre in the plain is the matha at Gorakhpur on the Rapti.

Wandering Nath yogis, with caves and hermitages across the middle country (the Gokhar hill at Mahoba is one), carry tantric and hatha-yoga teaching and have a following among peasants and chiefs. Later accounts say the Gorakhpur temple was destroyed twice (later).
