Padmanabhaswamy

The great Vishnu temple of the south, managed by the Venad rulers (Wikipedia, Padmanabhaswamy Temple).

Its ancient rank is attested by the hymns of the Alvars; the building of 1200 is not described in our sources. Its lands and the Brahmin council that rules them are the strongest religious power south of the Bharatapuzha.

How things stand that morning

A royal temple of Venad; quiet and rich.

Where the sources disagree

  • Common accounts describe the temple of the eighteenth century; the 1200 temple is a smaller building.

Evidence: The temple's management by Venad is on the page we read; its 1200 form is inferred.
