Arbanon is the mountain land of the Albanians (Arbanitai) round the fortress of Kruja, between Dyrrachion and Lake Ohrid and between the Shkumbin and Mat valleys.
The archon Progon made the Kruja district a hereditary lordship about 1190 within the Byzantine empire; he was succeeded about 1198 by his son Gjin, with his younger son Dimitri succeeding about 1208. The assignment's Dimitri son of Progon is the later archon (1208-1215/16, panhypersebastos, married Stefan's daughter Komnena in 1208): on 1 January 1200 the archon is Gjin by the usual reckoning. The archons are Byzantine office-holders with wide autonomy; their people are Catholic and Orthodox.
The Latin bishop of Arbanon, placed directly under the pope in 1188, signed the council of Vukan's new archbishopric of Bar in 1199, so the archons' church already looks north to Zeta while their lord is the emperor.

English Wikipedia (Principality of Arbanon; Progon of Kruja), citing Anamali and Prifti 2002, Ducellier and Fine 1994; the inscription of Gëziq (Ndërfandë) naming Progon and his sons.
Overlord
The emperor Alexios III (the archon's title is Byzantine; the doux of Dyrrachion is the nearest imperial officer).
What the realm holds
- Kruja and its fortress
- the Mat valley
- the Mirdita hills
- the hills between the Ishem and the Mat above the Dyrrachion plain
How it was acquired
Progon gained the Kruja district about 1190; it became hereditary.
Allies and rivals
Under the emperor through the doux of Dyrrachion; neighbours of Vukan's Zeta on the Drin (the Serbs are said to have taken Pult from Arbanon in 1198) and of the Byzantine districts of Dyrrachion and Ohrid.
The realm that morning
Gjin holds Kruja and the Mat as archon under the emperor (low confidence on his name and dates). Across the borders: Byzantine Dyrrachion (epi) on the plain and the coast, the Ohrid lands (mac) to the east, Vukan's Zeta beyond the Drin to the north.
Wealth
Pastures and flocks, the road from Dyrrachion inland (the old Via Egnatia passes south of the archons' core), timber.
Military
The fortress of Kruja and the mountain men; no figures.
Threats
- The Serbs of Zeta on the Drin.
- Imperial officers at Dyrrachion.
Where the sources disagree
- The assignment names Dimitri son of Progon as archon; the Wikipedia articles (citing Anamali and Prifti) give Gjin as archon from about 1198 to about 1208 and Dimitri from 1208. Dimitri is attested in 1208-1210 (Innocent III's letters, Venice); Gjin's dates are a modern reconstruction.
- English Wikipedia (Gjin Progoni) gives Gjin the areas round Elbasan as well as Kruja; Elbasan is left to the Byzantine side of the map here, since nothing places it under the archons in 1200.
Evidence: Progon and his sons are known chiefly from one inscription and from Dimitri's later contacts with Rome and Venice; the 1190 and 1198 dates are modern reckonings.
On the map: Drawn small: the extent in 1200 is not pinned.
