Udo

Udo, some 30 km west-north-west of Benin City, is the Edo town that Bondarenko and Roese call Benin's 'most violent rival for many centuries'.

Udo traditions collected by Darling make it the first seat of the first ogiso, Igodo, before Benin; they say the mothers of most ogiso and early Obas came from Udo, and in later custom Benin royal wives went to Udo to bear their first children. Udo has its own wall and ditch (mapped by Jones in 1947-48), which Darling thought older than Benin City's, and a bronze-casting style more archaic than Benin's. Darling suggested that Udo may have conquered Benin in the mid-fifteenth century; Benin subdued it by force in the early sixteenth (the war of Oba Esigie against his brother at Udo).

On 1 January 1200 Udo is best understood as an independent proto-town of the Edo, not under the Benin elders.

Where the sources disagree

  • Bondarenko and Roese put Udo about 24 km north-west of Benin City; the GeoNames position used here is about 30 km west-north-west.

Evidence: Udo traditions recorded by Darling and earlier writers, an undated earthwork, and later history.

On the map: Drawn under the Benin realm id because the sheet has no separate id for the Edo towns; it should read as a rival, not a dependency.
