Nri lies in the Awka uplands about 15 km north of Igbo-Ukwu.
It is a cluster of lineage quarters round the Eze Nri's compound and shrines, the base of the ritual agents who travel through Igboland. The later rule that any slave who set foot in Nri became free is said to date from the tenth Eze Nri, centuries later.
