One of the oldest Rus' towns, named in the Primary Chronicle under 862, in the land of the Finnic Muroma, and from early on a trading post between Volga Bulgaria and the north (en.wikipedia).
It is the capital of a small principality on Rus' south-eastern frontier, much exposed to attack from the east, and for that reason long dependent on stronger neighbours. The Transfiguration (Saviour) monastery is first chronicled in 1096, when Oleg of Chernigov killed Izyaslav, son of Vladimir Monomakh, here; he is buried there. Its business is the Oka trade with the Bulgars.
