The bishop's city: the walled cathedral close (Domburg) with its ministeriales, and round it the merchant town of the Roggenmarkt, the Alter Fischmarkt and the Prinzipalmarkt, with St Lambert's church endowed by the merchants.
Town rights date from about 1170. A great fire in 1197 destroyed much of it; since then craftsmen and traders may not resettle inside the Domburg, the town is being rebuilt round the eastern markets, Hermann has founded four new parishes, and an outer wall has been decided.
