Not yet a town or a market on 1 January 1200: Mairania (first named 857) is the settlement at the foot of Tyrol castle, the centre of the counts' lands since the twelfth century at the latest.
The counts found the market in the first half of the thirteenth century; it is walled in 1280 and becomes a town in the fourteenth century (charter of 1317). The famous Merano mint is later still.
