Town · The K2 kingdom of the middle Limpopo (Mapungubwe) · as at first light, 1 January 1200

Mapungubwe hill

A flat-topped sandstone hill with sheer sides, reached by narrow paths, close to the confluence.

On 1 January 1200 it is the kingdom's rain-making hill, with a rock shelter bearing San paintings on its east side. Its summit will become the ruler's secluded residence and the town at its foot the capital (about 1220 on the older dating, about 1270 on Huffman and Woodborne's), and in the thirteenth century elite graves on the summit will hold the gold objects, among them the gold-foil rhinoceros, for which Mapungubwe is famous. Whether part of the elite already lived on the hill in 1200 is not pinned.
