Lake Zway islands

The islands of Lake Zway in the Rift, home of the Zay, who speak a Semitic language close to Silte and Harari and are Christians in later times.

Tradition says Aksumite clergy fled here with the holy tabot in the time of Gudit (tenth century) and kept it on Tulu Gudo island for decades. Nothing is recorded for 1200.
