Town · West Africa: the Sudan and Guinea · as at first light, 1 January 1200

Kong

Kong began as a small chiefdom of the Falafala, a branch of the Senufo; its founding date is unknown.

Mande (Dyula) merchants settled there from the fourteenth century on the English account (from the twelfth on the French), and the town was Muslim by the sixteenth; the Kong empire of Seku Wattara dates from 1710. On 1 January 1200 Kong is, at most, a Senufo village or chiefdom; the Dyula trading town is later.
