A ducal market founded by Duke Hermann (died 1181) on the Spitalsberg at the southern edge of the Zollfeld, in the flood land of the Glan, first named between June 1192 and March 1199 when the duke freed St.
Paul abbey from toll 'in foro Chlagenuurt'. Floods drove Duke Bernhard to refound it on safe ground round today's Alter Platz in 1246; town rights 1252. On 1 January 1200 it is a small ducal market, not a town, and not on the later site.
