Inhambane

A sheltered bay that Vasco da Gama called the 'land of good people' (terra da boa gente) in 1498 and where the Portuguese later traded.

No evidence places a trading town here in 1200; Chibuene, 150 km north, is the known early landing place of this coast. The record marks the bay for the campaign's convenience.

Lord in 1200

Not known: no trading town is attested here for 1200.

How things stand that morning

Fishing and farming villages; no trading town attested.

Charter

None: a settlement under a chief, without written privileges.

Fairs and markets

No fixed markets are known; exchange at the chief's court and with visiting traders.

Where the sources disagree

  • Some writers place al-Idrisi's Daghuta on a southern gulf; Inhambane is one possible candidate, not a proven one.

Evidence: No archaeology of the period known to me; the record rests on the absence of evidence.
