Bilyar

The chief city of Volga Bulgaria, on the left bank of the Little Cheremshan in today's Alekseyevsky district of Tatarstan.

It was the capital from the 10th century into the early 13th, alternating with Bulgar and Suvar in the 12th-13th centuries, and is taken to be the 'Great City' (Veliky Gorod) that Vsevolod III besieged in 1183. Its ruins cover nearly 8 square km; a modern estimate (Khalikov 1989, Bukharaev 2014, cited by en.wikipedia) gives it over 100,000 people, a figure to treat with caution. It is one of the main trading centres of the middle Volga.
