The farming plain of al-Kharj, with deep sinkhole springs and wells, was the Ukhaydirid emirs' capital (al-Khadrima) from the late ninth century to the eleventh.
Its later history is obscure: the Banu Kilab took the country after the Ukhaydirids (Madelung), and the Uyunids of al-Hasa claimed Najd under Muhammad ibn Ahmad (587-605). In 1200 it is a district of oasis villages whose master is not recorded.
