Magnates and their honours · The K2 kingdom of the middle Limpopo (Mapungubwe) · as at first light, 1 January 1200

Lord of Mapela

A hill just over 90 m high, two kilometres east of the confluence of the Shashe and Shashani rivers and two kilometres north of today's Botswana border, about 90 km north-west of K2.

Its slopes carry massive stone terrace walls up to two and a half metres high, built from the eleventh century, on which elite houses with solid clay floors stood; vitrified dung on terraces and flats shows kraals on and below the hill. It is 'easily the largest known Leopard's Kopje site in southern Africa' (Chirikure et al.), occupied from about 1055 to 1400. On 1 January 1200 its pottery is turning from K2 to Transitional K2 (modelled boundary 1163-1224), and its beads show it was in the Indian Ocean trade.

It lies within 20 km of the Gwanda-West Nicholson gold belt.

Who he is

Title
Ruler of the Mapela hill town and its country
Since
Not pinned
Family
Leopard's Kopje people (the K2 culture)
Confidence
low

Archaeology only (Garlake's survey; Chirikure et al. 2014). Elite clay-floored houses on stone terraces from the eleventh century; the hilltop and terraces show class distinction.

Overlord

Not pinned: the K2 ruler in Huffman's model; none in Chirikure's

What it holds

  • Mapela hill and its terraced town
  • The country between the Shashe and the Shashani
  • Probably access to the gold workings of the Gwanda-West Nicholson belt, 20 km away

How it was acquired

Founded about 1055 (Bayesian start of the K2 phase 1055-1219); stone terracing from the eleventh century.

Allies and rivals

The K2 ruler (overlord, partner or rival); the Leopard's Kopje chiefdoms of the plateau to the north; the Toutswe chiefs across the Shashe to the west.

How things stand that morning

An active hill town with an elite on stone terraces, in the trade network. Whether its lord obeyed the K2 ruler on 1 January 1200 is not pinned; we place it with the K2 kingdom on the map because it shares the same culture and sequence, and because the alternative (a separate realm) has no id.

Wealth

Cattle; probably gold from the nearby belt; imported glass beads (over a thousand on one terrace; a later cache of thousands of Mapungubwe-series beads).

Military

The terraces and hill gave a strong position, but no warfare is attested.

Threats

  • Drought
  • Rivalry with the K2 ruler

What the year holds

What happened next, if nothing in play changes it. Each event carries what it depends on and what would stop it.

  1. Thirteenth to fourteenth centuryMapela continues and takes up Mapungubwe-style pottery; it outlives the K2 phase.Depends on: Continued trade. Stopped by: Not relevant to 1200.

Where the sources disagree

  • Chirikure et al. (2014) reject the older view that Mapela was a provincial centre under Mapungubwe and suggest Mapungubwe 'may have copied Mapela'. Huffman's model keeps it subordinate. We record the lord as allegiance not pinned.

Evidence: Archaeology with a Bayesian radiocarbon model; coordinates derived from the published description.

On the map: The district outline is an estimate round the hill; its relation to the K2 kingdom is not pinned.
