Kruszwica on Lake Gopło is the old chief castle of Kuyavia.
The castle was a princely residence in the 10th-11th centuries, burned in 1096 when it sheltered Zbigniew against Władysław Herman and rebuilt in the 12th century; since the end of the 12th century it has been the seat of a castellan (de.wikipedia). A castellan founded the collegiate church of SS Peter and Paul and the castle church of St Vitus. The district runs along the Gopło to the Greater Poland border (Strzelno on this side, Mogilno on the other) and east toward Radziejów.
Brine from the district is boiled for salt, and trade routes from the Oder to Rus and from Kalisz to Gdańsk cross here. It was Mieszko III's (through his son Bolesław) until 1198. No castellan is named for 1200.

Overlord
the duke of Masovia (Konrad, under his mother's regency)
What it holds
- The castle of Kruszwica and its market
- The salt boiling of the district
- The villages along Lake Gopło to Strzelno, Radziejów and Piotrków Kujawski
How it was acquired
An office held at the duke's pleasure; the castellan keeps the castle, leads its levy, judges and collects the dues of the district.
Allies and rivals
The palatine and the other castellans; the great families of the district.
How things stand that morning
Held for Casimir's sons since the 1198 agreement; castellan not named. The Greater Poland border at Mogilno is quiet that winter.
Wealth
Salt boiled from the district's brine; tolls on the routes crossing at Kruszwica; the district's dues.
Military
The castle levy of the district under the castellan; no numbers known.
Threats
- Mieszko III's house, across the Gopło, reclaiming Kuyavia
Places of note
- Collegiate church of SS Peter and Paul: Romanesque basilica of about 1120-1140
Where the sources disagree
Evidence: de.wikipedia gives the castle's history, the castellany from the late 12th century, the salt and the trade routes; no castellan of 1200 is named.
On the map: The district is drawn round its castle with the places named; castle districts were rights over the people of a group of villages, and their 1200 edges are not known.

- Chronicle of the Poles, by Master Vincent (Wincenty Kadłubek), Wincenty Kadłubek (about 1190 to 1208). Book 4 is a contemporary's account of the fight for the senior throne of Kraków. Read online
- The annals of the Kraków chapter and the other Polish annals (kept from the 11th century; the Kraków chapter annals continued to 1266). Short dated entries that fix the chronology Kadłubek blurs: the deaths of dukes and bishops, Mieszko the Old's captures of Kraków, Prussian raids on Masovia, church consecrations. Read online
