Kikai is a raised-coral island east of Amami Ōshima with a large trading and craft site on its plateau (the Gusuku site complex), occupied from the 9th to the 13th centuries.
Its goods come from Kyūshū, China and Korea and its own stoneware (Kamuiyaki) is made on Tokunoshima. It is the entrepôt through which Hakata merchants reached Okinawa. The Dazaifu ordered Kikai to arrest 'barbarians' in 998 (Nihongi ryaku, as reported by English Wikipedia); in 1187 the Satsuma lord Ata Tadakage fled there (English Wikipedia, citing the Azuma Kagami for 1187, calls it a flight 'during the period of the Taira clan's rule', which is odd for a date two years after the Taira fell: we read it as flight from Yoritomo's pressure on a Taira partisan [not yet checked against the source]); in 1188 Yoritomo sent men to pacify it, and the court objected that it lay beyond Japan's administration (English Wikipedia).
By 1200 the great days of the site are over; the island is a frontier of the Satsuma coast and the name Kikaigashima stands, in Japanese minds, for the edge of the world.
