Siewierz on the Czarna Przemsza is a Lesser Polish stronghold given to Mieszko with Bytom in 1177 (en.wikipedia lists it in the grant).
It lies east of the Brynica, facing the Kraków castellany of Będzin and the bishop of Kraków's Sławków.
Who he is
- Title
- Castellan of Siewierz
- Confidence
- low
Castellan (kasztelan, comes castellanus) not named for 1199-1200 in the sources consulted. Silesian castellans appear by name mostly in charters from 1202 onward; no name is carried back to 1 January 1200 here.
Overlord
Mieszko Tanglefoot, duke of Racibórz
What it holds
- The stronghold of Siewierz
- The land along the Czarna Przemsza
How it was acquired
Appointed by the duke at his pleasure; the castellan is not a hereditary lord.
How things stand that morning
Held for Mieszko (castellan not pinned): medium confidence, resting on en.wikipedia's list of the 1177 grant and on Siewierz's later history under the Upper Silesian dukes.
Places of note
- Siewierz castle: Castellany seat (gród)
Where the sources disagree
Evidence: Siewierz's inclusion in the 1177 grant rests on en.wikipedia and de.wikipedia lists; the castellany's existence in 1200 is not otherwise checked.
On the map: The district is drawn from its head castle and a few places near its later edges; its 1200 bounds are not documented.
