Province, circuit or island group · The chiefs of the Ryukyu islands · as at first light, 1 January 1200

Tokara

A chain of small volcanic islands between Yaku and Amami.

The Japanese sources of the time call the whole southern chain Kikaigashima, the edge of the world. No lord is known on any of them for 1200.

Who holds it

Name
not known for 1 January 1200
Title
No lord known: outside any government a source shows, a frontier of the Satsuma coast
Confidence
low

No source names a chief or an officer for 1200; the evidence is archaeology and a few Japanese notices of 1187 and 1188 (see the Ryukyu realm record, Ryukyu).

Overlord

none known; the court's title over Tane, Yaku and Tokara is a claim in name only (Kyoto court)

How things stand that morning

Outside any government shown by a source; a frontier of the Satsuma coast.

Where the sources disagree

Evidence: The campaign board entry and recollection; no province-level source for 1200 was reachable.

"The campaign board" is OMNIA's working map. These notes record where its earlier claims were checked against the sources.

On the map: Drawn from the modern units round the places named. These islands were never a province of Japan: the group is a convenience of the map, not a division of 1200, and the edges follow the units.

Primary sources for Ryukyu

Chronicles, registers, sagas and inscriptions written in or near 1200 that cover this entry. Each has its own page with editions, translations and where to read it.
