South-east Madagascar

The well-watered south-east round modern Fort Dauphin.

The Maliovola phase of the Efaho valley (eleventh to thirteenth centuries) shows small fishing and herding settlements (Mokala on the beach, Maliovola inland) with iron slag but little sign of rank. The Zafiraminia, a Muslim-descended group remembered as founders of the Antanosy and Antemoro ruling lines, arrive in later centuries.

Independent villages.

Assemblies

Village and lineage elders settle disputes and allocate land; there is no chief over the whole people that the evidence can show for 1200.

What the year holds

What happened next, if nothing in play changes it. Each event carries what it depends on and what would stop it.

Where the sources disagree

Evidence: Excavation (Wright and others, as summarised by Dewar and Wright).

On the map: Drawn from modern language areas, physical geography and a few dated sites; the 1200 extent is a rough guess.
