The Finnic Mari, the Cheremis of the Rus' chronicles, live on both banks of the Volga above the Kama mouth: the 'meadow' Mari on the left bank between the Vetluga and the Vyatka, and the 'hill' Mari on the right bank by the Sura mouth.
They are pagan forest farmers, hunters and bee-keepers, and pay tribute in furs and honey to the Bulgars, whose fur trade with the north passes up the Vyatka and the Vetluga through their country. Vladimir's men at Gorodets watch them from the west.

Where the sources disagree
Evidence: Very few written notices; the tribute to Bulgar is inferred from general accounts.
On the map: Rough; the Mari range was wider than any line. The lower Vetluga (Varnavino, Krasnye Baki) is drawn as Mari ground; the upper Vetluga and the Unzha towards Vladimir's Kostroma and Galich are left open, as their people and masters in 1200 are not pinned.
