Kuria Muria islanders

Five small islands off the coast east of Hasik, the Zenobian islands of the ancients, which the Arab geographers call Khartan and Martan.

Their few people are fishermen who, in later accounts, speak one of the old South Arabian languages of the Dhofar coast. No ruler or tribute is recorded for 1200.

Where the sources disagree

  • The medieval names Khartan and Martan are from the Arab geographers (al-Idrisi's tradition); we could not check al-Idrisi's text on the islanders' language directly.

Evidence: Geography; no dated record.

On the map: A box round the islands; only the islands themselves count.
