Iwere creeks

The creeks and islands where the Itsekiri kingdom was founded, in tradition, by the Benin prince Ginuwa about 1480.

Before that the inhabitants were fishing communities of Ijaw and of Yoruba-related (Ugbo and Mahin) origin, according to Itsekiri tradition. Nothing is dated to 1200.
