Far south of Madagascar

The dry far south.

At Andranosoa in the Manambovo valley a settlement of about 30 hectares, partly bounded by dry-stone embankments, was occupied about 1180-1300 (radiocarbon) by herders and foragers who kept sheep, goats and cattle and hunted creatures now extinct; a concentration of iron, imports and cattle bone in one part suggests a wealthier household, the clearest hint of rank in Madagascar at this date. Talaky near the river mouth was a fishing camp about 1250. The Antandroy of later centuries are not yet a people of record.
