People or land · West Africa: the Sudan and Guinea · as at first light, 1 January 1200

Central Ivory Coast

The country of the Bandama and the N'Zi where forest gives way to savanna.

Its western part was held in later times by southern Mande peoples (the Gouro or Kweni, the Gagou or Gban, the Yaouré, Mwan and Wan) who, with the Dan, are generally taken to be old inhabitants. The Baoulé who now fill its centre came from the Asante country in the eighteenth century under Queen Abla Pokou, and the Anyi further east also later; who lived in the Baoulé country on 1 January 1200 is not known. The Senufo Tagbana and Djimini held the north edge.
