Berta and Fazughli

The granite hills of the southern Blue Nile round later Roseires, Fazughli, Kurmuk and Asosa, with their alluvial gold, home of the Berta and their neighbours (the Gaam of the Ingessana hills, the Uduk and Koma to the south, the Burun to the west).

Oral tradition says Alodian refugees founded the kingdom of Fazughli after Soba fell, about 1500; Fazughli is first named in writing in 1607. An Alodian province called al-Anag may have lain here, but that is a guess. In 1200 these are self-governing hill peoples on the southern fringe of Alodia.
