Bariba and Busa

The savanna peoples of southern Borgu: the Gur-speaking Bariba (Baatombu) and the Mande-speaking Busa (Boko) along the Niger round Bussa.

The Borgu kingdoms of Bussa, Nikki and Illo were founded, in the Kisra tradition, by mounted warriors whom historians place in the fifteenth century (Kisra's arrival is dated about 1325 in another reckoning); before them Borgu was 'politically unorganized', with lineage-based societies (Adekunle 2008). No Borgu state is attested for 1 January 1200.

Where the sources disagree

  • Borgu is not attested as a polity about 1200, so the sheet's borgu realm id is not used.

Evidence: Later tradition.

On the map: A people's country drawn as a dashed outline; borders are approximate.
