The forest-steppe and steppe edge south of the Ryazan towns, from the Pronya headwaters and Skopin south over the upper Don (Dankov, Lebedyan, Yelets) and the Voronezh river to the Don below it.
Ryazan settlers and outposts reach into it: in 1177 the fugitive Yaropolk Rostislavich hid on the Voronezh and the Ryazan men went there to seize him (Ilovaisky, from the chronicle), so the river lies within Ryazan's reach. But the Cumans of the Don range up to it in summer and raided the Ryazan borderlands before 1199; at the Ryazan princes' request Vsevolod III led a campaign down the Don in spring 1199 that found no Cumans to fight, as they withdrew towards the sea (Ilovaisky, from the Laurentian Chronicle under the March year 6707). No peace is recorded.
In winter the Cumans are in their southern camps, so the belt is a summer danger: nobody can farm it safely and neither side holds it.
How things stand that morning
Raided frontier, no truce recorded.
Who raids whom
The Don Cumans raid the Ryazan borderlands; the Ryazan princes and Vsevolod III answer with campaigns into the steppe (spring 1199).
Anchors on each side
Ryazan: Pronsk, Skopin side, Mikhaylov. Cumans: the Don and the Donets pastures to the south (cum sheet).
Last campaign
Spring 1199 (Vsevolod III down the Don).
What the year holds
What happened next, if nothing in play changes it. Each event carries what it depends on and what would stop it.
- 1206 (after this year)The Ryazan princes raid the Cuman camps on the steppe and bring back captives and herds.
Where the sources disagree
Evidence: The raids and the 1199 campaign are in the chronicles; no raid is recorded for the winter of 1199-1200 itself. The belt's extent is an estimate from the forest-steppe line.
On the map: The cum sheet may draw the same zone from the Cuman side; the west edge against the Vyatichi land and the east edge on the upper Tsna (Tambov side) are rough.
