Morella frontier

The rough country between the Christian Bajo Aragón (Calatrava at Alcañiz, the Templars at Castellote, the knights of the Matarraña) and Muslim Morella, the greatest Muslim fortress of the northern Valencian sierra, with Peñíscola on the coast.

The orders and the lords of the lower Ebro raid toward Morella and the Ports; Morella's garrison raids the Guadalope, the Matarraña and the hinterland of Tortosa. Morella falls only in 1232.

How things stand that morning

Raided by both sides; the exact Christian line around Cantavieja and the Ports is not pinned.

Who raids here

Christian: the Order of Calatrava (Alcañiz), the Templars (Castellote, and on the Catalan side Horta and Miravet), the Hospital (Amposta), the lords of Tortosa. Muslim: Morella and its castles, Peñíscola.

Where the sources disagree

Evidence: Drawn between the known strongholds; the holders of Cantavieja, Aliaga and the Matarraña villages in 1200 were not checked.

On the map: Rough. Morella and its villages sit inside the belt as the Muslim stronghold; the Catalan side (Tortosa's hinterland) belongs to the Catalonia file.
