The strip west of the Dee between the earl of Chester's castle of Hawarden and Llywelyn ap Iorwerth's newly won Mold, running north to the Dee shore at Flint and Bagillt and south toward Hope.
Llywelyn took Mold, the castle of the earl's steward, in 1199; the earl is in Normandy and has not struck back. Neither side can farm this ground safely in the winter of 1199-1200; cattle raids across it are to be expected, though none is recorded for that winter.
Who raids here
Llywelyn ap Iorwerth's men from Mold and Tegeingl against the Montalt lands round Hawarden and the earl's Wirral and Chester; the earl's and the steward's men in return
Anchors on each side
Welsh: Mold (Bailey Hill), taken in 1199; the princes' court at Rhuddlan's district. English: Hawarden castle (the steward's), Chester castle, Shotwick castle
Last campaign
1199: Llywelyn's capture of Mold (Brut y Tywysogion)
Where the sources disagree
Evidence: The capture of Mold in 1199 is recorded; raiding in the winter of 1199-1200 is inferred. To be reconciled with the Wales researcher's belts.
