Alentejo belt

After al-Mansur's campaigns of 1190-1191 Portugal kept only Evora south of the Tagus.

The plain round it, between the Tagus valley (Coruche, the new settlement of Benavente) and the Almohad line of Alcacer do Sal, Beja, Moura, Juromenha and Elvas, is raided by both sides: the Knights of Evora ride out against the Almohad towns, and Almohad garrisons strike at Evora's herds and the Sorraia valley. No pinned truce covers it in 1200.

Who raids here

The Knights of Evora and the Portuguese of the Tagus line; the Almohad garrisons of Alcacer, Beja, Moura and Juromenha.

Castles

Portuguese: Evora (isolated), Coruche, Alcanede and the Tagus line. Almohad: Alcacer do Sal, Beja, Serpa, Moura, Juromenha, Elvas (Elvas not securely pinned).

Last campaign

Al-Mansur's campaigns of 1190 and 1191; Portuguese recovery of Sesimbra about 1200. Next: Alcacer do Sal falls in 1217.

Where the sources disagree

Evidence: Evora's isolation after 1191 is well attested; the belt's extent and the activity in 1200 are a judgement.

On the map: A zone, not a line; Evora and its immediate land are Portuguese and should be drawn over the belt.
