The tract traditionally identified as Videha, the kingdom of Janaka and the birthplace of Sita.
The identification is retrospective: Janakpur as a settlement is an eighteenth century foundation and its great temple is nineteenth, and no excavation has found a medieval town on the spot (the campaign board). What exists in 1200 is a stretch of the plain with a Ramayana claim attached to it and pilgrims walking through.
